Vehicle Registration Information

NOTICE: Vehicle and/or trailers must be registered in the County you reside in.

Vehicle registration stickers can be renewed at any of the 5 Tax Offices or the 24 substations in Montgomery County. Please provide the following when renewing:

  • The renewal notice from the State of Texas
  • Proof of insurance for the vehicle on the renewal notice
  • Note: Motorcycle owners must show insurance for a Motorcycle.
  • Proper identification (Valid U.S. issued I.D card / Driver’s License or Passport)
  • Correct amount in the form of cash, check or money order. WE DO NOT ACCEPT OUT-OF-STATE CHECKS FOR ANY REASON

If your vehicle or trailer requires new license plates, you must visit one of the Tax Offices to process your renewal. Also, all title transfers and new resident registrations are done at the Tax Offices.

  • Registration stickers may also be renewed by mail. Please send the following:
  • The renewal notice from the State of Texas
  • A photo copy of Proof of Insurance
  • Check or Money Order for the registration amount

Transferring A Texas Title

Seller:

  • Sign the back of the Texas Title
  • On the back of the title, complete the buyer’s name, complete address and odometer reading (if vehicle is less than 10 model years old)
  • Sign the form 130-U (Title Application)
  • If the vehicle is currently registered, provide the buyer with the registration receipt

Buyer:

  • Sign the back of the title (if the vehicle is less than 10 model years old)
  • Sign the form 130-U (Title Application)
  • Transfer the title within 30 calander days
  • Provide proof of insurance (Motorcycle insurance is required for all Motorcycle Titles)
  • Must have a valid U.S. issued I.D. card / Driver’s License or U.S. Passport

Note: No Foreign I.D. accepted.

For New Residents of Texas:

  • Obtain Proof of Liability Insurance for the vehicle you wish to register
  • (Motorcycle insurance is required for all Motorcycle Titles)
  • Have the vehicle inspected, in the County of residence, at a state-approved Safety Inspection Station. You will receive a Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) for a passing vehicle.
  • Register the vehicle at the Tax Office. Bring the following: Proof of Insurance, Vehicle Inspection, Negotiable Out of State Title or Out of State Registration and the Application for Texas Certificate of Title (Form 130-U)
  • There is an additional $90.00 new resident fee at time of registration
  • Must have a valid U.S. issued I.D. card / Driver’s License or Passport
